T5 LED tube 548 mm 9W with 140 lm/W

This 548 mm T5 LED tube (approx. 55 cm) is the LED replacement for a 14W T5 fluorescent tube with a length of 549 mm. A reliable, affordable tube that matches the light output of your old T5 fluorescent tube. You keep the same amount of light and use far less electricity. At 9 watts the tube delivers 1,260 lumens at 4000K, comparable to a standard 14W HE T5 fluorescent tube. It fits any G5 lampholder, starts instantly and is flicker-free.

Key features

  • Up to 44% more efficient than a 14W T5 fluorescent tube with ballast
  • 1,260 lumens from 9 watts, an efficacy of 140 lumens per watt
  • G5 cap with single-ended connection: safe and easy to wire
  • Full light instantly, with no warm-up time, flicker or buzzing
  • Aluminium housing with opal PC cover: even light and no broken glass
  • Over 13 years of life at 10 hours a day, plus a 5-year warranty

Which T5 fluorescent tube does this replace?

T5 fluorescent tubes with a length of 549 mm come in several wattages. This LED tube replaces the 14W HE version (approx. 1,200 lumens). Together with its ballast, a 14W T5 tube uses around 16 watts, while this LED tube uses 9 watts.

Example: at 10 hours a day and 250 working days a year, you save around 17.5 kWh per tube per year. With 20 tubes that adds up to about 350 kWh a year, with no more replacement costs for fluorescent tubes.

Replacing a T5 fluorescent tube with LED: how it works

A T5 fitting always works with an electronic ballast and has no starter. This LED tube does not need the ballast: the driver is built into the tube and runs directly on 200-240V. When converting, remove or bypass the ballast and connect live (L) and neutral (N) to the lampholder at one end. Then fit the tube with the marked supply end in that lampholder. The other end only holds the tube in place.

Please note: do not fit the tube in a fitting where the ballast is still connected, and do not connect it to a dimmer. If in doubt, have the conversion carried out by an electrician.

Where to use this 55 cm T5 LED tube

  • Offices and schools: in 600x600 grid luminaires for suspended ceilings (4x14W T5)
  • Kitchens and workbenches: as under-cabinet or alcove lighting
  • Shops and display cases: for shelves, cabinets and displays
  • Corridors and stairwells: in smaller wall and ceiling fittings

The tube is suitable for dry indoor spaces. For damp rooms, outdoor use or dusty areas, choose a waterproof (IP65) fitting.

How many m² does one tube light?

As a rule of thumb, about half of the light actually reaches the working surface. With 1,260 lumens, one tube lights around 2 m² at 300 lux (corridors, storage, canteens) or 1.5 m² at 500 lux (offices and workstations according to BS EN 12464-1). For a 20 m² office you would need about 13 tubes. Ceiling height, wall colour and the type of fitting determine the exact result.

Which light colour should you choose?

This tube is available in 3000K, 4000K and 6000K.

  • 3000K Warm white: soft, yellowish light. Pleasant for hospitality, waiting areas, living spaces and anywhere atmosphere matters.
  • 4000K Neutral white: neutral white light. The most popular choice for offices, classrooms, shops and corridors.
  • 6000K Cool white: cool white with a slightly bluish tint. Often used in workshops, garages, labs and storage.

The 3000K version gives slightly less light: around 1,170 lumens.

Frequently asked questions

Will this LED tube fit my existing T5 fitting?

Yes, if the fitting has G5 lampholders and takes tubes of 549 mm. The ballast does need to be bypassed, as described above. Without this change the tube will not work.

What is the difference between T5 and T8?

A T5 tube is slimmer (about 16 mm for a fluorescent tube, 22 mm for this LED tube) and has a G5 cap with small pins. A T8 tube is about 26 mm thick and has a G13 cap. The lengths also differ, so T5 and T8 are not interchangeable.

What is the difference between 140, 170 and 200 lm/W?

The figure shows how much light the tube produces per watt. At the same wattage, a 200 lm/W tube gives over 40% more light than a 140 lm/W tube. Choose 140 lm/W if you want the same amount of light as now, and 170 or 200 lm/W if you want more light or fewer fittings.

Is the tube dimmable?

No, this T5 LED tube is not dimmable. Do not connect it to a dimmer or a dimmable ballast.

How long does the tube last?

The rated life is 50,000 hours. At 10 hours a day, that is over 13 years. A standard T5 fluorescent tube lasts around 20,000 to 25,000 hours. You get a 5-year warranty.
