COB LED strips

COB LED strips

A COB LED strip gives one crisp, continuous line of light without visible dots, even without a diffuser profile and even in the reflection of a glossy worktop or tiled wall. Ideal for ceiling coves, kitchens, cabinets and retail interiors where the line of light itself is on show. Our 24V COB strips have CRI 90+ and deliver 800 to 1,000 lumens per meter, in white, CCT, RGB and RGB+CCT. For long runs there is also a 230V COB strip up to 50 meters on a single plug.

Where a COB strip makes the difference

  • Visible lines of light: in an open profile, along a staircase or in a wall niche you see a clean line instead of a row of dots.
  • Kitchens: under the cabinets the light falls evenly on the worktop, without dots in a glossy surface.
  • Ceiling coves: a calm, unbroken glow along the whole wall.
  • Shops and showrooms: with CRI 90+, products, wood and fabrics look as they really are.

What is a COB LED strip?

COB stands for Chip on Board. Hundreds of small LED chips sit directly on the circuit board, close together and under a single phosphor layer. On our strips that is 320 to 400 chips per meter. The result is an even line of light in which you see no separate dots. That is why COB is the standard for visible lines of light and for places where a deep profile does not fit.

Which COB LED strip do you choose?

  • Essential, 8 W/m: about 800 lumens per meter. For ambient and accent lighting, cabinets and ceiling coves. Also as a narrow 3 mm strip for tight profiles.
  • Advanced, 10 W/m: about 1,000 lumens per meter. For task lighting under kitchen cabinets, in shops and on counters.
  • Free cut: cut the strip anywhere, handy when the length has to fit exactly.
  • IP65: with a silicone coating for bathrooms, next to the sink and outdoors under a roof. Cuttable every 2 centimeters.
  • CCT: set the color temperature from warm to cool white.
  • RGB and RGB+CCT: more than 16 million colors, with separate white channels on RGB+CCT for pure white light. Digital RGB is controlled per segment for chasing effects.

All white COB strips are available from 2200K extra warm white to 6000K cool white. For living spaces and hospitality you usually choose warm white, for workplaces 4000K.

What you need

  • A 24V power supply: add up the watts and divide by 0.8. Example: 6 meters at 10 W/m is 60 W, so a power supply of at least 75 W. See the LED strip power supplies.
  • COB connectors for straight joints, corners, T-junctions and cable connections. Check the width: 8 mm for white, 10 mm for RGB and CCT, 12 mm for RGB+CCT. See the LED strip connectors.
  • A dimmer or controller for brightness, CCT or color, with a remote (RF 2.4 GHz), wall panel or WiFi app. See the dimmers and controllers.

Prefer it complete? The COB plug & play sets from 5 to 20 meters include the strip, power supply and connection.

Frequently asked questions about COB LED strips

What is the difference between COB and SMD?

An SMD strip has individual LEDs with gaps in between; without a diffuser you see the dots. A COB strip gives one even line. Per lumen SMD is slightly more efficient, while our COB strips have better color rendering (CRI 90+ versus CRI 80+). See also the SMD LED strips.

Do I need a profile for a COB strip?

Not for even light. An aluminum profile does dissipate heat and protects the strip, which extends its life at higher wattages and in places where the strip can be touched.

How far can I run a COB strip?

At 24V you usually feed power every 10 meters. For longer runs, feed power at both ends or add a power supply so the light stays just as bright at the end.

Are COB LED strips dimmable?

Yes, with an LED strip dimmer or controller between the 24V power supply and the strip, also with a remote or app.

Can a COB strip be used outdoors?

The IP65 version suits damp spaces and outdoor use under a roof. See also the outdoor LED strips.
